Apart from its wildlife treasures, the crater is also of great archaeological importance, with remains of early human ancestors discovered nearby. Tarangire is renowned for its extraordinary concentration of wildlife, particularly during the dry season. Herds of up to 300 elephants can often be seen scratching the dry Tarangire River bed in search of underground streams, while vast numbers of migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest, and eland gather around the shrinking lagoons. This abundance attracts a variety of predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, caracals, and spotted hyenas.

Tarangire is also the only park in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and the unique long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed. Bird enthusiasts will delight in sightings of over 500 bird species, from colorful lilac-breasted rollers to large flocks of yellow-collared lovebirds and Kori bustards.

Amboseli is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including lions, buffalo, cheetahs, giraffes, baboons, gazelles, hippos, and wildebeest, among many others.
