Ride across Bhutan on a 10-day motorcycle adventure through mountain passes, remote valleys, sacred monasteries and the legendary Tiger’s Nest.
Some journeys are measured in kilometres. Others are measured in the moments that stay with you long after you've returned home.
This 10-day Bhutan Biking Adventure follows one of the country's most scenic routes, travelling from the fertile valleys of Paro and Punakha through the subtropical forests of Gelephu, into the remote heart of Zhemgang and Bumthang, before returning through the peaceful landscapes of Phobjikha and Thimphu. Travelling by motorcycle brings you closer to Bhutan's changing landscapes, allowing you to experience the country at a slower pace while enjoying some of the finest mountain roads in the Himalayas.
Designed for riders who appreciate both adventure and cultural discovery, this journey balances exhilarating rides with time to explore ancient monasteries, traditional villages, historic fortresses and quiet valleys where daily life has changed little for generations. Along the way, you'll meet local communities, discover Bhutan's unique Buddhist heritage and experience the warmth of Bhutanese hospitality.
Rather than rushing from one landmark to another, the itinerary allows time to pause, take in the scenery and enjoy the journey itself. Every mountain pass, forest road and riverside valley becomes part of the experience.

Upon arrival, you'll be warmly welcomed by your SoulTrips guide and transferred to your hotel. After time to settle in, we'll gather for a short journey briefing where you'll meet your riding crew and learn more about the adventure ahead.
This afternoon is intentionally unhurried. Ease into Bhutan's gentle pace with a stroll through Paro, a charming valley town where intricately carved wooden buildings, prayer wheels and colourful shopfronts line quiet streets. It is the perfect introduction to a country where tradition remains deeply woven into everyday life.
Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Paro Valley is home to some of Bhutan's oldest temples and monasteries. The clear waters of the Paro Chhu flow through the valley, nourishing rice fields and villages that have remained remarkably unchanged for generations. Rather than rushing between attractions, today is about slowing down, adjusting to the mountain air and embracing the peaceful rhythm that defines Bhutan.

Your motorcycle adventure begins in earnest today as you ride through one of Bhutan's most scenic mountain routes towards Punakha. The road winds through pine forests, traditional villages and mountain landscapes where every turn reveals another spectacular view.
Your first stop is Tachog Lhakhang, a peaceful 14th century temple founded by the legendary Tibetan yogi and bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo. Crossing the traditional iron chain bridge over the Paro Chhu is an experience in itself before you arrive at this quiet sanctuary overlooking the river.
The journey continues steadily uphill until you reach Dochula Pass, perched at 3,100 metres above sea level. Here, 108 white memorial chortens stand among fluttering prayer flags, creating one of Bhutan's most iconic mountain scenes. On clear days, panoramic views stretch across the snow-covered peaks of the eastern Himalayas, offering a rewarding pause before descending into the warmer Punakha Valley.
In the afternoon, explore the magnificent Punakha Dzong, widely regarded as Bhutan's most beautiful fortress. Built in 1637 at the sacred meeting point of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the dzong has played a central role in Bhutan's history for centuries. Wander through peaceful courtyards adorned with intricate wood carvings and colourful murals while discovering the stories that shaped the kingdom.
Before arriving at your hotel, take a leisurely walk across the Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan. Suspended high above the river, it offers sweeping views across the valley and a unique perspective of Punakha Dzong framed by forested hills.
As evening falls, unwind beside the river and reflect on your first full day riding through Bhutan's extraordinary landscapes.

Today's ride reveals another side of Bhutan as you leave the cool mountain valleys behind and descend towards the subtropical south. Over the course of the day, the scenery transforms dramatically. Pine forests gradually give way to broadleaf woodlands, lush valleys and warmer temperatures, highlighting the country's remarkable diversity within a relatively short distance.
Following quiet roads through the Tsirang region, you'll pass terraced farms, orange orchards and small villages where daily life continues much as it has for generations. This lesser-visited part of Bhutan offers a refreshing contrast to the country's better-known cultural centres and provides a genuine glimpse into rural Bhutanese life.
Travelling by motorcycle allows you to appreciate these changing landscapes in a way few other journeys can. There is time to stop along the route, stretch your legs and simply enjoy the scenery before continuing south.
By late afternoon, you'll arrive in Gelephu, Bhutan's southern gateway near the Indian border. Its warmer climate and relaxed atmosphere feel worlds apart from the mountain landscapes of previous days. After checking into your hotel, enjoy a leisurely evening while your guide shares stories of the remote regions you'll soon be exploring.

Leaving Bhutan's southern plains behind, today's ride takes you deep into one of the kingdom's least-visited regions. The winding mountain roads climb steadily through dense subtropical forests, where every kilometre reveals dramatic changes in scenery. This region is renowned for its rich biodiversity, and if fortune is on your side, you may even catch a glimpse of the elusive Golden Langur, one of Bhutan's most treasured endemic primates.
The journey is unhurried, allowing plenty of opportunities to stop, breathe in the fresh mountain air and appreciate the remarkable wilderness that surrounds you. Far removed from the usual tourist routes, this is Bhutan at its most authentic.
Upon arriving in Zhemgang, explore the beautifully preserved Trong Heritage Village, a settlement that appears almost untouched by time. Believed to date back several centuries, its traditional stone houses, narrow alleyways and intricate timber architecture offer a fascinating glimpse into medieval Bhutan. As you wander through the quiet village, you'll discover a community where heritage remains very much alive and daily life continues at a gentle pace.
Spend the evening soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of this hidden corner of Bhutan before preparing for tomorrow's ride into the country's cultural heartland.

Today's journey is one of the most rewarding rides of the expedition as you travel north through pristine valleys towards the spiritual heartland of Bumthang. The road meanders through forested mountains, quiet villages and spectacular river gorges, revealing landscapes that remain largely untouched by modern development.
Midway through the journey, you'll arrive in the historic town of Trongsa, once the strategic centre from which Bhutan's kings unified the nation. Perched dramatically above a deep valley, Trongsa offers some of the country's most impressive mountain scenery.
Pause at the Trongsa Dzong Viewpoint, where panoramic views reveal the immense fortress clinging to the mountainside. It is one of Bhutan's most photographed landmarks and an ideal place to appreciate the scale and significance of this remarkable stronghold.
Continue to the beautifully restored Trongsa Museum (Taa Dzong), formerly a defensive watchtower overlooking the fortress below. Today, the museum houses an exceptional collection of royal heirlooms, sacred artefacts and historical treasures that trace the story of Bhutan's monarchy and cultural heritage. Thoughtfully curated exhibitions bring centuries of Bhutanese history to life while offering magnificent views across the valley.
The journey continues through increasingly alpine scenery before arriving in Bumthang, a region often regarded as Bhutan's spiritual and cultural soul. With its wide valleys, ancient temples and peaceful villages, Bumthang offers a distinctly different atmosphere from anywhere else in the country.
Overnight in Bumthang.
Elevation: 2,800m

Today is dedicated to exploring Bumthang, a region revered as the spiritual heart of Bhutan. Surrounded by broad valleys, traditional villages and ancient monasteries, it is a place where Bhutan's history, craftsmanship and living traditions come together in remarkable harmony.
Your morning begins in Chumey Valley with a visit to the renowned Yathra Weaving Centre. Here, skilled artisans continue the centuries-old tradition of producing Yathra, Bhutan's distinctive handwoven wool textile celebrated for its warmth, durability and vibrant geometric patterns. Watch master weavers at work on traditional looms and gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
Later, venture into the tranquil Tang Valley, one of Bumthang's most picturesque and secluded landscapes. The scenic drive passes quiet temples, forested hillsides and peaceful farming communities before reaching the village of Kesum. From here, enjoy a rewarding walk across a suspension bridge and through traditional villages to the historic Ugyen Choling Palace.
Built in the 17th century, the palace is one of Bhutan's most remote heritage sites and welcomes only a small number of visitors each year. Its intimate museum offers a rare glimpse into Bhutanese aristocratic life, with carefully preserved living quarters, antique tools, religious artefacts and everyday household items that tell the story of a bygone era.
As evening approaches, experience Bhutanese hospitality during a cultural gathering with members of the local community. Traditional songs, dances and warm conversation provide a memorable conclusion to a day immersed in the living culture of Bumthang.

Leaving Bumthang behind, today's ride takes you across some of Bhutan's most captivating mountain landscapes. Winding roads lead through forested valleys and highland villages before retracing part of the historic route through Trongsa, where dramatic mountain scenery accompanies every turn.
As the journey unfolds, the landscape gradually opens into the broad glacial basin of Phobjikha Valley, one of Bhutan's most cherished conservation areas. Known for its peaceful atmosphere and sweeping wetlands, the valley offers a striking contrast to the narrow mountain roads travelled earlier in the expedition. Between November and March, this protected sanctuary becomes the winter home of the endangered black-necked cranes, which migrate from the Tibetan Plateau each year.
Perched above the valley is Gangtey Goemba, one of the most important monasteries of the Nyingma school of Buddhism. Founded in the early 17th century, the monastery remains an active spiritual centre where monks continue centuries-old traditions. From its hilltop setting, you'll enjoy uninterrupted views across the valley while gaining a deeper appreciation of Bhutan's enduring spiritual heritage.
Later, enjoy a leisurely walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, one of Bhutan's most scenic and accessible hikes. The trail meanders through pine forests, traditional farmhouses and open meadows before descending into the valley floor, offering countless opportunities for photography and quiet reflection. It is a fitting way to experience the serenity that has made Phobjikha one of Bhutan's most beloved landscapes.

This morning begins with a visit to the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre, where you'll learn about one of Bhutan's most successful wildlife conservation stories. Interactive exhibits and observation points provide fascinating insights into the annual migration of these graceful birds and the fragile ecosystem they depend upon. If travelling during the winter months, you may even have the opportunity to observe the cranes in their natural habitat.
The ride continues towards Thimphu, crossing the spectacular Dochula Pass before descending into Bhutan's lively capital. Although Thimphu is the country's political and commercial centre, it retains a distinctly Bhutanese character, where traditional architecture, monasteries and prayer flags coexist alongside cafés, galleries and boutique shops.
Before entering the city, stop at Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan's oldest surviving fortress, built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Despite its modest size, the dzong is renowned for its intricate slate carvings depicting Buddhist saints and philosophers, making it one of Bhutan's most historically significant landmarks.
Continue to Buddha Dordenma, an imposing 51.5-metre bronze statue overlooking Thimphu Valley. Beyond its impressive scale, the site offers panoramic views across the capital and provides a peaceful setting to pause before exploring the city itself.
As evening approaches, take time to wander through Thimphu Town. Browse local handicraft shops, enjoy Bhutanese cafés or simply stroll along Norzin Lam, where traditional buildings and modern city life blend seamlessly together.

No journey through Bhutan would be complete without visiting its most iconic landmark. After an early ride back to Paro, you'll begin the rewarding hike to Taktsang Monastery, better known as the Tiger's Nest.
Clinging dramatically to a sheer granite cliff 900 metres above the valley floor, Tiger's Nest is one of the world's most extraordinary monasteries. According to Bhutanese legend, Guru Padmasambhava arrived here in the 8th century on the back of a flying tigress before meditating in a cave that became the spiritual heart of the monastery. Built in 1692, Taktsang remains an active pilgrimage site and a powerful symbol of Bhutanese Buddhism.
The hike takes you through fragrant pine forests, colourful prayer flags and peaceful mountain trails, with increasingly spectacular views as you ascend. Reaching the monastery is as rewarding as the destination itself, offering moments of reflection and a profound sense of accomplishment.
After descending, return to Paro for your final evening in Bhutan. It's the perfect opportunity to celebrate the friendships formed, the roads travelled and the unforgettable experiences shared throughout this remarkable Himalayan adventure.
Overnight in Paro.
After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Paro International Airport for your onward flight.
As your aircraft lifts above the Himalayas, take a final look at the valleys, monasteries and mountain passes that have shaped your journey through the Kingdom of Bhutan. Over the past ten days, you've travelled far beyond the familiar, discovering not only spectacular landscapes but also a culture that values harmony, compassion and a slower way of life.
Whether it's the winding mountain roads, the warmth of the people you met, or the quiet moments spent among monasteries and forests, Bhutan has a way of leaving a lasting impression long after you've returned home.
We hope this journey marks not the end of your adventure, but the beginning of many more meaningful travels with SoulTrips.
