A 5-day cultural journey from Dambulla's cave temples and Sigiriya Rock Fortress to the beaches of Bentota and the city sights of Colombo.
Sri Lanka rewards travellers who give themselves time to experience it properly. This five-day journey brings together ancient temples, remarkable heritage, rural life and the relaxed rhythm of the coast, before finishing in the lively streets of Colombo.
Your journey begins in Dambulla, where centuries of Buddhist art and devotion fill the caves of the Golden Temple. From here, you’ll discover Sigiriya and the extraordinary rock fortress built in the 5th century, followed by a glimpse into everyday rural life through a village experience among paddy fields, traditional agriculture and local cooking.
The journey then moves towards the west coast and Bentota, where there is time to step away from sightseeing and simply enjoy the beach. Your final stop is Colombo, where old trading quarters, colonial-era buildings, religious sites and modern city life come together.
Designed for travellers who want a comfortable introduction to Sri Lanka without trying to fit the whole island into one trip, this itinerary balances cultural discovery with time to slow down.
Ancient cave temples, the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, rural Sri Lankan life, local food, time beside the coast and the contrasting energy of Colombo.

Your Sri Lankan journey begins as you arrive at Colombo Airport, where you’ll be welcomed by your local representative before travelling inland towards Dambulla.
The drive takes you away from the capital and into the island's central landscapes. Once in Dambulla, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting the Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cave temple complex is one of Sri Lanka's most important cultural landmarks. Its caves contain centuries of Buddhist art and religious heritage, and the complex is regarded as the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka.
After your visit, check in to your hotel and take some time to settle in after the journey. The evening is intentionally unhurried, giving you space to rest before tomorrow's exploration of Sigiriya.
Overnight in Dambulla.
Today brings together two very different sides of Sri Lanka. After breakfast, set out for Sigiriya and its extraordinary rock fortress.
Dating back to the 5th century AD, Sigiriya was the royal citadel of King Kassapa for more than 18 years. Built high above the surrounding landscape, the site reflects an extraordinary combination of engineering, artistry and royal ambition. Its frescoes and distinctive setting continue to make it one of Sri Lanka's defining cultural experiences.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you'll see a quieter side of the region during a village experience around Sigiriya.
Travel through paddy fields by traditional bullock cart, take a boat ride and learn about chena, a traditional method of agriculture. You'll also have the opportunity to see how local dishes are prepared during a Sri Lankan cooking demonstration, followed by a traditional lunch.
It is a day that moves beyond the country's most famous monument and gives you a closer look at the landscapes and everyday traditions surrounding it.
Overnight in Dambulla.
After breakfast, leave Dambulla behind and travel towards Bentota on Sri Lanka's western coast.
The journey takes approximately five hours, gradually shifting the scenery from the cultural heart of the island towards the coast. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to your hotel.
Once you've checked in, the rest of the day is yours.
After two days of cultural exploration, this is your chance to slow down. Spend time by the beach, relax at the hotel or simply enjoy having nowhere you need to be.
Overnight in Bentota.
After breakfast, continue towards Colombo, Sri Lanka's largest city and its commercial and entertainment hub.
The city offers a striking mix of old and new. During your city tour, explore Pettah, one of Colombo's busiest trading districts, before continuing to Fort, where historic buildings sit alongside the city's modern development.
You'll drive past the Old Parliament building and along Galle Face, the city's coastal promenade, before visiting Seema Malakaya, a Buddhist meditation centre associated with renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa.
The journey through Colombo continues with visits to Buddhist and Hindu temples and a drive through the leafy Cinnamon Gardens area.
There will also be time to experience Colombo's shopping scene. From the lively Pettah bazaar to established shopping complexes along Galle Road, you'll find opportunities to browse for garments, handicrafts, books, leather goods and other local and international products.
Lunch is at a Chinese restaurant before you return to your hotel and have time to relax.
As evening arrives, Colombo's coastal setting offers another side of the city. Galle Face is known for its open views towards the sea and its evening sunsets, providing a quieter moment amid the energy of the capital.
Overnight in Colombo.
After breakfast, your Sri Lankan journey comes to an end as you transfer to Colombo Airport for your flight home.
You'll leave with memories of ancient Buddhist heritage, the landscapes around Sigiriya, encounters with rural traditions, time beside the coast and the contrasting character of Colombo.
