Fitness Level Required

The Soi Yaksa Trek requires a good level of fitness and is recommended for travellers who enjoy multi-day hiking and outdoor adventures.

Expect 5 to 7 hours of trekking on most days, with steep ascents, descents, and elevations reaching over 4,800 metres at the highest mountain passes. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential if you are physically active and comfortable walking for several consecutive days on uneven terrain.

Spend the day discovering Bhutan's cultural and administrative centre.

Visit the towering Buddha Dordenma overlooking the valley, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, before continuing to the National Memorial Chorten, where locals gather daily for prayer and reflection. Explore Tashichho Dzong, the impressive fortress monastery that houses the King's offices and Bhutan's central monastic body.

Journey to Punakha Valley

Travel east towards Punakha, crossing the spectacular Dochula Pass at over 3,000 metres above sea level.

On clear days, the pass offers breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayas, framed by colourful prayer flags and the iconic 108 memorial chortens. Descend into the warmer and more fertile Punakha Valley, once Bhutan's capital and still one of its most beautiful regions.

Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, dramatically positioned at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Widely regarded as Bhutan's most beautiful fortress monastery, it remains one of the country's most important religious and historical landmarks.

Return to Paro & Trek Preparation

After breakfast, journey back towards Paro Valley, the gateway to Bhutan's western Himalayas and the starting point of your trekking adventure.

Along the way, enjoy changing landscapes as mountain forests replace the subtropical valleys of Punakha. Upon arrival in Paro, visit cultural landmarks and receive a detailed trek briefing from your guide.

Use the remainder of the day to rest, organise your trekking gear, and prepare for the days ahead in the mountains.

Paro → Shana
Trek Begins: Paro to Shana

Your trekking adventure begins today as you travel to the trailhead beyond Paro Valley.

Following the Paro Chhu River, the trail winds through pine forests, traditional farmhouses, and small settlements before entering the protected wilderness of Jigme Dorji National Park. The gradual ascent allows time to settle into the rhythm of the trek while enjoying beautiful river scenery and pristine mountain landscapes.

Shana → Soi Thangthangkha
Shana to Soi Thangthangkha

Continue deeper into the Himalayas as the trail follows the river through forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron.

As you gain elevation, the valley gradually opens to reveal increasingly dramatic mountain scenery. Pass isolated yak-herding settlements and remote grazing areas while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of Bhutan's high country.

By late afternoon, the snow-capped peaks of the eastern Himalayas begin to dominate the horizon.

Soi Thangthangkha to Jangothang

Today's trek is one of the highlights of the entire journey.

Following alpine meadows and glacial valleys, continue towards Jangothang, widely considered one of Bhutan's most spectacular trekking camps. Along the route, enjoy uninterrupted views of Mount Jomolhari, one of Bhutan's most sacred mountains rising dramatically above the landscape.

Surrounded by towering peaks and open Himalayan wilderness, Jangothang offers an unforgettable setting for the night.

Leave Jangothang behind and venture further into remote mountain terrain.

The trail climbs through rugged alpine landscapes, crossing high ridges and traditional yak-grazing areas that have supported mountain communities for generations. Prayer flags flutter from rocky outcrops while panoramic views extend across snow-covered peaks and vast wilderness.

Today involves crossing one of the trek's highest mountain passes.

The climb is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the surrounding Himalayan ranges. From the pass, descend through high-altitude landscapes filled with alpine meadows, glacial streams, and dramatic mountain scenery.

The remote setting and spectacular views make this one of the most memorable stages of the entire journey.

Conclude your Bhutan journey with a visit to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as Tiger's Nest.

Perched dramatically on a cliffside nearly 900 metres above Paro Valley, this sacred monastery is Bhutan's most iconic landmark and one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas. Follow forest trails lined with prayer flags while your guide shares the legends surrounding Guru Rinpoche and the monastery's spiritual significance.

After the hike, transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward flight.
